Die Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz ist die größte private Initiative für Denkmalpflege in Deutschland. Sie setzt sich seit 1985 kreativ, fachlich fundiert und unabhängig für den Erhalt bedrohter Baudenkmale ein. Ihr ganzheitlicher Ansatz ist einzigartig und reicht von der Notfall-Rettung gefährdeter Denkmale, pädagogischen Schul- und Jugendprogrammen bis hin größten Kulturveranstaltung Deutschlands, dem „Tag des offenen Denkmals®“.
Rund 600 Projekte fördert die Stiftung jährlich, vor allem dank der aktiven Mithilfe und Spenden von über 200.000 Förderern. Insgesamt konnte die Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz bereits viele tausend Denkmale mit mehr als einer halben Milliarde Euro in ganz Deutschland unterstützen. Doch immer noch sind zahlreiche einzigartige Baudenkmale in Deutschland akut bedroht.

Vielleicht haben Sie es schon bemerkt: Denkmalschutz wird in der Öffentlichkeit oft kontrovers diskutiert und sehr unterschiedlich dargestellt. Diesen gegensätzlichen Standpunkten verdankt die Ausstellung ihren Titel: „Liebe oder Last?! Baustelle Denkmal“.
Die insgesamt sechs Stationen tragen ebenfalls solche Gegensatzpaare als Titel und symbolisieren in ihrem Aufbau unterschiedliche Baustile und Denkmalgattungen. Errichtet sind sie aus Baugerüsten, was zeigen soll, dass Denkmalschutz auch permanente Arbeit bedeutet.
Für dieses Konzept und die kreativen Ideen der einzelnen Elemente hat die Ausstellung bereits drei Designpreise erhalten, wie z.B. den red dot design Award, den renommiertesten Designpreis der Welt.

Was ist Denkmalschutz für Sie? Ist er eher Liebe oder eher Last? Ihr Votum dürfen Sie gerne in der Mitte des Tores abgeben, in dem Sie den entsprechenden Buzzer drücken!
Was glauben Sie: Sind Denkmale gut geschützt? Oftmals wirken Denkmale im wahrsten Wortsinn „monumental“ und unangreifbar.
Doch das ist ein Irrtum! Denkmale sind permanenten Angriffen ausgesetzt, jedes Jahr gehen hunderte von ihnen verloren.
Erkunden Sie in dieser Station verschiedene Gefahren, denen Denkmale ausgeliefert sind.
Auf der linken Seite sehen Sie, wie unterschiedliche Materialien auf Umwelteinflüsse reagieren. So massiv Metall, Stein und Holz auch wirken – auch sie können leicht Schaden nehmen.

Auf dem Holz erkennen Sie römische Ziffern, die sogenannten „Abbundzeichen“. Sie geben die richtige Reihenfolge beim Aufbau an.
Hier sehen Sie weitere natürliche Gefahren, denen Denkmale ausgesetzt sein können. Dies können auch Pilze, Feuchtigkeit oder Bewuchs sein. Fest steht: Denkmale brauchen regelmäßige Pflege und Hilfe, um die Zeiten überstehen zu können.

Wussten Sie, dass jedes Jahr hunderte Denkmale – trotz Denkmalschutz! – abgerissen werden? Die Gründe hierfür sind meistens wirtschaftlicher Art. Auch ideologische Gründe können zu Denkmalverlust führen.
Doch Denkmale sind echte Zeitzeugen, die über viele Generationen hinweg Geschichte vermitteln können – auch wenn sie für Epochen stehen, an welche die Menschen vielleicht nur ungerne erinnert werden wollen.
Dass Denkmale vom Abriss bedroht sind – ist leider gerade heutzutage sehr verbreitet. Immer wieder geraten Gebäude in den Fokus von Diskussionen über Abriss, Umnutzung oder Veränderungen. Wenn man etwas zurück blickt, sieht man sehr schnell, wie fatal das sein kann. Wussten Sie, dass zahlreiche bekannte Denkmale wie das Holstentor in Lübeck oder die Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche in Berlin einmal auf der Kippe des Abrisses standen und abgerissen werden sollten?
Einen kleinen Eindruck von den Argumenten und Beweggründen von Abrissbefürwortern und -gegnern sehen Sie, wenn Sie die Plexiglaskugeln drehen. Auf der Unterseite finden Sie Original-Zitate und Quellen. Doch nicht immer sind die Rettungsbemühungen erfolgreich, wie Sie an der St. Hedwigs-Kathedrale in Berlin sehen können. Hier wurde der gesamte Innenraum zerstört – obwohl er unter Denkmalschutz stand und mit einer Ober- und Unterkirche etwas ganz besonderes war.

Wenn Sie den Sprengschalter herunterdrücken, erscheinen die Denkmale auf dem Bildschirm. Bedrückend ist auch häufig, für welche neuen Gebäude diese weichen mussten – oftmals wurde Geschichte und Kunst gegen Standardbauten eingetauscht. Was können Bauwerke über ihre Entstehung und Geschichte erzählen? Ganz schön viel! Denn durch die Gebäude werden Bauweise, Handwerk und Lebenswelt verschiedener Generationen erleb- und sichtbar.
In dieser Station wird der Fokus auf die Erfahrungswelt der Denkmale gelegt: Auf das Handwerk, mit dem es entstanden ist; auf die Zeitumstände, die den Bau des Gebäudes prägten und auf die Menschen, die heute in den Denkmalen leben und sich dieser Aufgabe stellen.
Ein Denkmal ist häufig auch ein Träger von Handwerkskunst und -techniken, die wir manchmal schon fast vergessen haben. Viele davon beherrschen heutzutage nur noch wenige Handwerker. In unserem „Digitalen Werkzeugkasten der Denkmalpflege“ finden Sie eine Auswahl von 18 historischen Werkzeugen, die heute meist nur noch im Bereich der Denkmalpflege eingesetzt werden. Neben diesen finden Sie weiße Punkte – wenn Sie diese berühren, sehen Sie auf dem Bildschirm das Werkzeug im Einsatz. Raten Sie doch einmal vorher, wofür das Werkzeug nützlich sein könnte!
Leben, (Aber-)Glaube, Stand und Vermögen der ehemaligen Bewohner – all dies ist einem historischen Gebäude häufig noch abzulesen. Die Voraussetzung hierfür: die Originalsubstanz des Denkmals ist erhalten. Schon einmal vorab: Denkmalschutz ist keine Frage des Geschmacks und DEN Denkmalschutz gibt es nicht, denn er ist in jedem Bundesland etwas anders geregelt…
Die Bewertung der Zeitgenossen eines Gebäudes spielen eine große Rolle für den Zustand eines Gebäudes. Zwei Beispiele dafür, wie unterschiedlich solche Bewertungen in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten ausfallen konnten, sehen Sie auf dem Monitor „Denkmale im Wandel der Zeit“. Anhand der Trierer Porta Nigra und des Aachener Doms wird deutlich, wie Denkmale verändert wurden und wie ausschlaggebend die jeweilige Weltanschauung und Zeitgeist für ihren Erhalt oder ihre Bedrohung waren. Gehen Sie auf Zeitreise und entdecken Sie Denkmale im Wandel der Zeit.
An den drei Drehtafeln sehen Sie die drei Hauptgründe für die Unterschutzstellung eines Denkmals. Jedes Gebäude, das unter Denkmalschutz gestellt werden soll, muss mindestens eines dieser Kriterien erfüllen. Auf der Rückseite der Tafeln sehen Sie konkrete Beispiele, die das jeweilige Kriterium veranschaulichen. So hat das Römische Theater in Mainz, das im ersten Jahrhundert n. Chr. erbaut wurde, einen wissenschaftlichen Wert, da durch die Bewahrung des Baus wichtige archäologische Erkenntnisse gewonnen werden können.

Wie geht Denkmalschutz eigentlich ganz praktisch? Wer muss alles mitwirken, um ein Denkmal fit für die Zukunft zu machen? Diesen Fragen geht diese Station auf den Grund.
Denkmalschutz geht nur gemeinsam und besteht immer aus Teamarbeit von unterschiedlichen Kompetenzen, Berufen und Unterstützern. Hier wird deutlich, dass alle Expertisen und Leistungen wie Zahnräder ineinander greifen müssen, um ein Gebäude zu erhalten. Darum erinnert die Station in ihrem Aufbau und ihrer Gestaltung an ein Fabrikgebäude mit Förderband und Zahnrädern.
Den Kreislauf vom Renovierungsbedarf oder einem auftretenden Schaden bis zum Abschluss der Baumaßnahmen können Sie an diesem Förderband nachvollziehen. Jeder Hausbesitzer weiß, dass an einem Gebäude ständig etwas zu reparieren und auszubessern ist. Handelt es sich um ein Denkmal, so ist das Besondere, dass die Maßnahmen mit der Denkmalbehörde abgestimmt werden müssen, damit die Baumaterialien und Maßnahmen möglichst dem Original entsprechen. Zudem gibt es auch besondere finanzielle Hilfen: Verschiedene Fördermittelgeber wie die Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz unterstützen mit Rat, Tat und Geld.
Ohne sie ginge es nicht – viele Menschen setzen sich persönlich dafür ein, dass unsere gebaute Geschichte erhalten wird.
Zu diesen Menschen gehören auch die rund 200.000 Förderer der Deutschen Stiftung Denkmalschutz. Sie spenden Zeit oder Geld, legen in den Jugendbauhütten selber Hand an oder gründen vielleicht sogar eine eigene Stiftung unter dem Dach der Deutschen Stiftung Denkmalschutz. Einige dieser Menschen, die unsere Arbeit erst möglich machen, und die Motive, die sie dabei anleiten, können Sie hier kennlernen!
Im Idealfall greifen auch die unterschiedlichen Fördermittelgeber für Denkmaleigentümer wie Zahnräder ineinander: Hier finden Sie Informationen über konkrete Fördermöglichkeiten aus Mitteln der öffentlichen Hand, private Fördermittelgeber wie die Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz oder zu anderen Möglichkeiten der Unterstützung. Denkmale verleihen unseren Städten und Dörfern ein unverwechselbares Gesicht. Welche Auswirkungen es hätte, wenn wir sie nicht schützen würden oder gar verlieren, das sehen Sie, wenn Sie durch das Fernglas an unserem Leuchtturm schauen – hätten Sie die Orte erkannt? Unsere einzigartige, hochmoderne und multimediale Wanderausstellung wirft einen ungewöhnlichen Blick auf das kontroverse Thema Denkmalschutz und gibt Antworten auf viele Fragen, irrtümliche Annahmen oder gängige Vorurteile, die so noch nirgendwo beantwortet worden sind.
In sechs interaktiven Stationen macht die Ausstellung die „Baustelle Denkmal“ lebendig und spannend nachvollziehbar. Wir zeigen Ihnen, wie ein Denkmal ein Denkmal wird, geben Einblick in die Gefahren, denen Denkmale ausgesetzt sind, wir besuchen Denkmaleigentümer und werfen einen Blick in den Werkzeugkoffer der Denkmalpflege. Our unique high-tech multimedia travelling exhibition takes an unusual look at the controversial issue of monument protection. It provides answers found nowhere else quite like this to many questions, false assumptions or common biases.
Six interactive stations bring the “Monuments Under Scrutiny” exhibition to life in an exciting and understandable way. We show you how a monument becomes a monument, give you insights into the threats they face, visit monument owners and take a look into the monument care toolbox. A wealth of amusing, uncommon facts and actions related to monument care are waiting to be discovered!

You may have already noticed that monument protection is often the topic of controversial public discussion, and it’s portrayed in very different ways. Such opposing viewpoints are the reason behind the exhibition’s title, “Loved or a burden?! Monuments under scrutiny”.
Each of the six theme stations also features a title with the same kind of opposing word pairings, and their constructions symbolise different architectural styles and types of monuments. They are built of construction scaffolding to illustrate that monument protection is also a never-ending job.
The exhibition’s concept and the creative ideas behind each element have already won three design prizes, including the “red dot design Award”, the most prestigious design prize and the largest design competition in the world.

But what is monument protection for you? Is it more of a love or a burden? You can place your vote in the middle of the gate by pushing the corresponding buzzer!
What do you think? Are monuments well protected? Monuments often have a “monumental” character and therefore seem impervious to attack.
But that’s wrong! Monuments are permanently exposed to attack, and hundreds of them are lost every year.
At this station, you can explore the various threats monuments are vulnerable to.
On the left side, you can see how different materials react to environmental influences. As massive as metal, stone and wood might appear, even they can suffer minor damage.

In the box here in the middle, lightly touch the screen at one of the three markings to experience how weather, pests or even people affect this unique and diverse material.
The wooden timber frame in the box was made by participants in our “Jugendbauhütten”, or ‘masons lodge’ programme, in which young people can a do voluntary social year caring for monuments.
You can see Roman numerals on the wood known as “Abbundzeichen”, or ‘carpenters signs’. They designate the correct order of construction.
Here you can see more natural dangers that monuments can be exposed to. These can also include fungal growth, moisture or vegetation. What’s certain is that monuments need regular care and support to last over the ages.

Did you know that despite monument protection, hundreds of them are demolished every year? This is generally for financial reasons. Even ideological reasons can result in the loss of monuments.
But monuments are genuine eyewitnesses, able to convey history over many generations – even if they represent eras people may not be eager to remember.
Unfortunately, the threat that demolition poses to monuments is very widespread at the moment. Again and again, buildings are the focus of discussions about demolition, repurposing or alterations. If we look back into the past a little, we can quickly see just how fatal this can be. Did you know that many well-known monuments such as Holsten Gate in the city of Lübeck or Berlin’s Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church were once on the brink of demolition or were even scheduled to be torn down? If you turn the plexiglass balls, you’ll get a small impression of the arguments and motives of advocates and opponents of demolition. You’ll find original quotes and sources on the underside.
But monument rescue efforts are not always successful, as you can see with St. Hedwig’s Cathedral in Berlin. The entire interior was destroyed, despite the fact that it had monument protection status and was a very special structure featuring an upper and lower church.

It’s also depressing to realise what kinds of new buildings monuments have frequently had to make way for, with history and art often sacrificed in exchange for standard structures. Follow the information and find out what buildings are standing on these sites today.
What can structures tell us about their origins and history? A lot! Buildings enable us to see and experience something about how they were built, craftsmanship, and the world inhabited by different generations.
This station focuses on the realm of experience associated with monuments: on the craftsmanship used to build them, the time-related circumstances that affected their construction, and the people who live in them today and take on the responsibility for their care and upkeep.
A monument is often also a prime example of crafting skills and techniques we’ve virtually forgotten today and that few craftspersons still master. In our “Monument Care Digital Toolbox”, you’ll find a selection of 18 historical tools used primarily today only in the field of monument care. Next to them on the screen are white dots you can touch to see that particular tool at work. But before you do that, try to figure out first what the tool in question might have been used for!
Provided its original structural substance is preserved, a historical building can often reveal clues about the lives, faith, superstitions, status and financial situation of its former inhabitants. You can conduct precisely this kind of search for historical clues here at this monitor. Use the magnifying glass at the bottom right to choose between three types of buildings. You can get an idea about the traces left on them by history, their owners and the craftspeople who worked on them. But to start with, remember that monument protection is not a matter of taste, and there’s no single form of monument protection, because it’s regulated a little differently in each German state…
The opinions of the general public about a structure at any given time play a major role in its condition. You can see two examples of just how different these opinions were in past centuries on the “Monuments through Changing Times” monitor. The Porta Nigra in Trier and the Aachen Cathedral clearly demonstrate how monuments have been altered, and just how crucial the prevailing worldview and zeitgeist were at the time for their preservation or endangerment. The three rotating panels show you the three main reasons a monument is given protected status. Every structure to be granted monument protection must meet at least one of these criteria. On the backside of the panels, you can see specific examples that illustrate the individual criterion. For instance, the Roman Theatre in Mainz, built in the 1st century CE, has scientific value, since the preservation of the structure can provide important archaeological knowledge.

How does monument protection actually work in purely practical terms? Who are all the people who have to be involved to make a monument fit for the future? This station addresses these questions.
Monument protection is always a joint effort involving teamwork and a variety of skills, professions and supporters. We can see here that all the expertise and activities have to interlock like gearwheels to preserve a structure. This is why this station’s layout and design are reminiscent of a factory building equipped with a conveyor belt and gearwheels.
This conveyor belt helps you imagine the cycle that takes place, starting from when a structure needs renovation or damages begin to appear, and finishing with the completion of the remedial construction works. Every homeowner knows there is always something to repair and improve with a building. If it’s a monument, one special requirement is that these measures have to be coordinated with the presiding monument authorities so the construction materials and actions correspond as much as possible with the original. And there is also special financial assistance for monuments. Various supporters such as the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Foundation for Monument Conservation) provide helpful advice, actions and funding.
Many people are dedicated to making sure we hang onto our building history, and none of this would be possible without them.
They also include some 200,000 people who support the work of the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Foundation for Monument Conservation). They donate time or money, help out with the work in the youth masons guilds, or even found their own charitable foundation under the umbrella of the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Foundation for Monument Conservation). They are witnesses to our history and landmarks of our home regions. They are the product of human creativity, and they are artistic or technical masterpieces. They are what remains of us, a marker of how our culture and the state of development in our time will one day be judged.
As Germany’s largest citizens’ initiative for monument care, the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Foundation for Monument Conservation) dedicates all of its strength and conviction to this important heritage. For us, monument protection is our way of saying “Thank you” to the past, our appreciation of the present, and our gift to the future. We are overjoyed by every monument we’re are able to preserve by working together. And we’re delighted if you’ve also discovered your own love for monuments now!
Monuments are everywhere, even here! You can see several small flags in front of you showing monuments from this region. You can arrange them into different categories on our “Voting Carpet” according to your opinion about each of the monuments.
Monuments gives our cities and towns their unmistakable face. Look through the telescope on Lookout Point to see how that would change if we didn’t protect them, or if they were even lost. Did you recognise those places? Insert a 2 € coin for a brand new view. Try it out!
